    The online pharmacies we considered for this list all offer some kind of discount for either the prescription medication they dispense or for shipping—or, in many cases, both. Some companies, such as Amazon Pharmacy, offer subscribers deeper discounts on medications and/or shipping than non-subscribers.

  • Do Online Pharmacies Take Insurance?

    Of the eight companies on our list, three accept insurance in addition to the other perks they offer. OptumRx, our choice for Medicare users, is an insurer, so it doesn't accept patients with any other kind of insurance. Many companies that do not accept insurance, such as GeniusRx, claim that their prices are lower than those offered by insurance coverage.

Methodology

To create this list of the best online pharmacies, we evaluated over 30 companies that offer online pharmacy services. Factors taken into account for this evaluation include the cost of medications, telehealth services, shipping, and subscriptions, states, and ages served, variety of healthcare services and medication provided, availability of healthcare professionals to answer questions, customer service availability, quality of service and customer reviews, track record of reliability, shipping speed, and discretion, and safety of your personal data.

Since online pharmacies are growing in popularity, it was also important for us to look at each company on this list from a safety standpoint first. Several companies did not make this roundup because of concerns over their practices, such as some of what’s cited on this FDA list.

About Amoxicilin

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including bacterial pneumonia, dental abscesses, and urinary tract infections. It is ineffective against viral infections. Amoxicillin works by killing bacteria, including inhibiting specific processes in bacterial cells.

Amoxicillin is available as amoxicillin pills, chewable tablets, or oral suspension. It’s always important to follow the specific instructions on your prescription, as they can vary based on the formulation and dosage prescribed. The medication is available as a generic formulation as generic amoxicillin, as well as under different brand names. Common brand names include Amoxil®, Moxilin®, Sumox® and Trimox®

If you're prescribed amoxicillin, complete the entire antibiotic treatment course unless your doctor tells you to stop. The antibiotic will only fully treat your bacterial infection if you finish your prescription. Otherwise, you may be at risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Amoxicillin uses

There are several FDA-approved uses for amoxicillin, but your healthcare provider may also prescribe it off-label to treat other medical conditions.

How to take amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is available in several forms and doses, including amoxicillin capsules, tablets, and oral suspension. Adults, teenagers, and children typically take between 250 mg and 500 mg every 8 hours or between 500 mg and 875 mg every 12 hours.

Make sure to follow the entire course of antibiotic treatment, even if your symptoms improve. You may develop antibiotic resistance if you don't finish your amoxicillin prescription.

What to avoid while taking amoxicillin

Amoxicillin has several drug interactions. Don’t change what you take without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. That includes other medications, supplements, and other drugs.

Otrexup (methotrexate)
Warfarin
